SUMMARY:Women's History Month - Book Talk w/ Dr. Danielle Terrazas Williams
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a historical look into the world of free African-descended women during colonial Mexico with Dr. Danielle Terrazas Williams and her book\, The Capital of Free Women: Race\, Legitimacy\, and Liberty in Colonial Mexico. \n\n\n\nBefore taking your seat for the book talk\, we invite you to stroll along the Gallery of Iconic Women\, part of our celebration for Women’s History Month. This gallery is proudly brought to you by local Fremont Teens! \n\n\n\nDr. Danielle Terrazas Williams is an award-winning historian and Associate Professor in the School of History at the University of Leeds in England. Her work examines how Spanish American institutions imagined marginalized people and how race and gender influenced the ways in which people navigated imperial demands and religious expectations. \n\n\n\nHer book\, The Capital of Free Women: Race\, Legitimacy\, and Liberty in Colonial Mexico (Yale University Press\, 2022)\, challenges traditional narratives of racial hierarchies and gendered mobility by focusing on free African-descended women. Her work has appeared in The Americas\, The Journal of Women’s History\, and The History of Religions. Dr. Terrazas Williams is currently a Visiting Fellow at the Kellogg Institute of International Studies at the University of Notre Dame. \n\n\n\nThe book talk will follow with a Q&A with Dr. Danielle Terrazas Williams. \n\n\n\nThank you for celebrating Women’s History Month with us! \n\n\n\n(Walk-ins day of the event will be welcomed to participate depending on room availability.)
