Alameda County was established in 1853 out of territory from two other counties that were created in 1850 — Contra Costa and Santa Clara. It now has 14 incorporated cities and several unincorporated communities. Oakland is the county seat.
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors is made up of five members serving their respective districts for staggered four-year terms. The current board is made up of 1st District Supervisor David Haubert, 2nd District Supervisor Elisa Márquez, 3rd District Supervisor Lena Tam, 4th District Supervisor Nate Miley and 5th District Supervisor Keith Carson.
