Newark Unified School District board of education accepted the resignation of Mark Triplett on a 3-2 vote during a special meeting on Monday evening, with board members Bowen Zhang and Phuong Nguyen opposed.
In October, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he would be ending the state of emergency Feb. 28, and cities are starting to pass resolutions doing the same. This week, the Union City and Newark city councils passed resolutions that will end their local states of emergency on the same day as the state, bringing to an end eviction moratoria, delivery fee caps and other COVID-19 era policies.
Newark is focusing on supporting its small businesses, helping facilitate the recovery of the city’s hotel and retail industries, staying competitive in terms of its land use development and workforce, and further developing communication and collaboration with the business community.
On Monday, the Newark Unified School District Board of Education voted, 4-1, including student board member Diego Torres, to approve $169,125 for the purchase and installation of water bottle filling stations at all school sites and $6.3 million to demolish the existing track and football field at Newark Memorial and plan, design, engineer and construct a new one.
On Tuesday, the Newark Planning Commission unanimously granted Nimish Patel, of Patel Real Estate, a conditional use permit to demolish Nijo Castle Japanese Restaurant at 39888 Balentine Drive in order to build a 132-room Marriot AC hotel with two ballrooms, a bar and a roof terrace, among other things. Commissioner Jeff Aguilar was absent.
The project includes 279 multifamily units, a 6-story mixed-use building with 3,600 square feet of retail space and 91 affordable multifamily units, a 1,485 square foot community building, the 5-acre Grand Park, and 1.8 acres set aside for a future transit station.
The city of Newark, like other municipalities across the country and world, was deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the stay-at-home orders, business closures and high unemployment rates that followed. Two years later, Newark Mayor Alan Nagy says the city is still feeling the impacts, but it’s doing better than expected.
