Hayward

The city of Hayward, which is on the unceded land of the Ohlone people, was incorporated on March 11, 1876 as “Haywards,” named after the Haywards Hotel, which was a major stop between Oakland and San Jose. The s was dropped several years later.

The Hayward City Council is made up of six at-large members and a mayor serving staggered four-year terms representing the whole city. The current council is made up of Mayor Mark Salinas and councilmembers Angela Andrews, Elisa Márquez, Julie Roche, George Syrop, Francisco Zermeño and Dan Goldstein.

The current council meets weekly at 7 p.m. Tuesdays in Hayward City Hall at 777 B Street.
