Tri-City

Formerly known as the Washington Township, the Tri-City area includes present-day Fremont, Newark and Union City. It was home to the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone people before the arrival of the Spanish, who established Mission San Jose in 1797, permanently altering the Ohlone way of life. After Mexico won its independence from Spain and brought an end to the Mission era, Mission San Jose’s property was broken up into Rancho del Agua Caliente (Warm Springs area), Rancho Arroyo de la Alameda (Niles and Decoto area), Rancho Potrero de los Cerritos (Newark and Alvarado area) and Ex-Mission San Jose (Mission San Jose, Irvington and Newark).

The arrival of the pioneers in the mid-1800s transformed the area into one dedicated to intensive agriculture and eight towns eventually formed in the township — Niles, Mission San Jose, Centerville, Irvington, Warm Springs, Newark, Decoto and Alvarado, which formed out of the settlements of New Haven and Union City.
