Union City

The city of Union City, which is on the unceded land of the Ohlone people, was incorporated in 1959 by merging the towns of Decoto and Alvarado, the latter of which resulted from the merger of the settlements of New Haven and Union City about a century earlier. Decoto and Alvarado were neighboring towns from 1870 to 1959, but a citizen’s committee led by Tom Kitayama, who would become the city’s first mayor, petitioned to have the two towns incorporate into a city to keep the city of Hayward from annexing both.

The City Council of Union City is made up of four members from each district and an at-large mayor who serve staggered four-year terms. It is currently made up of Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, District 1 Councilmember Gary Singh, District 2 Councilmember Jaime Patino, District 3 Councilmember Jeff Wang and District 4 Councilmember Scott Sakakihara.

The council generally meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at City Hall at 34009 Alvarado Niles-Road.
