Newark Unified School District is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on its school board through the middle of this month.

The Newark Unified board of education on Thursday informally gave the OK for staff to move forward with a timeline to replace Board Member Bowen Zhang, who resigned on Feb. 17. The district is accepting applications for the position through March 22 and approved applicants’ names and application answers are expected to be posted on the district’s website for 10 days starting March 24.

On April 3 or 4, the board is expected to hold a special meeting to interview the candidates, and the person selected is scheduled to be sworn in at the board’s regular April 6 meeting.

The state Education Code requires school districts to fill a board seat that has been left vacant within 60 days of the seat becoming vacant.
