The city of Newark, which is on the unceded land of the Ohlone people, was incorporated in 1955 after first considering becoming part of the city of Fremont, along with the communities of Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose, Niles, and Warm Springs. However, Centerville and Niles tried to pressure Newark into accepting industrial zoning for the entire town so that it could become the southern county’s major industrial area, a battle it had already fought and won with the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
The Newark City Council is made up of five at-large members, who serve staggered four-year terms, and the current council is made up of Mayor Michael Hannon and councilmembers Mike Bucci, Luis Freitas, Maria “Sucy” Collazo and Matthew Jorgens.
The council generally meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month in the City Council Chamber at 37101 Newark Boulevard.
